The Zimbabwe Institution of Engineers offers membership to engineering professionals. The membership has different categories depending on the individual’s educational qualifications and post-university/college engineering experience. Currently, the Institution’s membership stands at above 8,000 members (all grades). The ZIE membership grades and admission criteria are outlined below:
Membership Grades
GRADE | NARRATIVE |
Honorary Fellow | This grade is awarded to persons honored for their distinguished and exceptional contribution/services to engineering and/or to the Institution. |
Fellow | Progressive Grade: when a member has attained a superior position of responsibility. Any engineer who has served as a Member for more than five years and is over forty years of age can apply for the Fellow Member Grade. |
Member | Holder of a University Degree in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years post-university engineering experience. |
Technologist | Holder of a Quasi-Engineering or HND in Engineering and a minimum of 3 years post-university engineering experience. |
Technician | Holder of a minimum educational qualification of a National Diploma who has gained at least 3 years post-college engineering experience. |
Graduate Engineer | University Graduate who has not yet gained the necessary practical training and experience. |
Graduate Technologist | University Graduate in Quasi-Engineering Degree/Diploma who has not yet gained the necessary practical training and experience. |
Graduate Technician | Qualified Technician who has not yet gained the required practical experience. |
Student | Person undertaking a course of study in an engineering field which will eventually qualify them for some other professional grades of membership are entitled to join the Institution as a Student. |
Affiliate Organization | An organization which, by the nature of its works and services contributes to the advancement of engineering, science and technology. |
Companion | A person honored by the Institution for his/her services and direct contributions to the development of Engineering and the engineering profession. |
What ZIE Expects from its Members
ZIE’s greatest arsenal or asset is the interest and involvement of Engineering professionals and related Built Environment Stakeholders in engineering matters. It is the Institution’s conviction that Engineering is one of the young generations’ professions of choice and its members should demonstrate that. The members concur that as united professionals; together, they can build a strong Engineering Profession for the good of the nation and the international community. It is underscored that ZIE members should actively participate in engineering concerns bedeviling the nation and deliberately contribute their knowledge, skills and experiences through the various institutional committees.
